Warriors Earn Sweep at Jamestown
JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Familiar faces squared off on the ice this weekend in North Dakota as Midland University traveled to face the University of Jamestown. In their third and fourth meetings of the season, the Warriors prevailed with a pair of wins. They took the opener 3-0 on Friday and completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory on Saturday.
FRIDAY: Midland 3, Jamestown 0
The Warriors capitalized on their opportunities, scoring on power-play chances in each of the first two periods.
Ashlyn Kuffler opened the scoring early in the first period off assists from Jaicee Huberdeau and Kiara McGregor as the Jimmies served a penalty for too many skaters.
In the second period, Taylor Bell added a goal at the nine-minute mark on another power play, assisted by Huberdeau and Darbi Poole. This time, Jamestown was down a skater for a checking minor. Before the period ended, Midland extended its lead as Jadis Howden scored off a feed from Kuffler.
The key difference was special-teams play. Midland went 2-for-3 on the power play, while Jamestown failed to convert on six opportunities, including three in the final period.
Goaltender Meghan Stewart was solid in net for the Warriors, making 16 saves to earn her third shutout of the season. Jamestown's goalie faced 29 shots and recorded 26 saves.
SATURDAY: Midland 2, Jamestown 1
The weekend finale was a cleaner contest, with Midland assessed just two minor penalties and Jamestown only one. The limited power-play opportunities resulted in a tighter game.
Midland struck first at the 7:27 mark of the opening period when Darbi Poole scored off an assist from Brynn Tosh. The score remained 1-0 for the next 35 minutes.
At 6:12 of the third period, the Warriors added a crucial insurance goal as Victoria Campbell scored unassisted. Jamestown responded less than a minute later with its first goal of the weekend at the 7:09 mark.
Midland's defense held strong over the final 12-plus minutes to secure the series sweep and remain undefeated.
Goaltender Natalie Rampton earned the win with 14 saves. Jamestown's goalie stopped 36 shots in the loss.
Midland (7-0) will look to keep its momentum going as it returns home for a pair of games next weekend. The Warriors will host Minnesota (2-2) on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at noon at Sidner Ice Arena in Fremont, Nebraska.
