Warriors Begin Weekend with Sweep of Adrian
ADRIAN, Mich. – Midland University took to the road this week to begin a four-game stretch with two matchups against Adrian College on Thursday and Friday. Facing a high-caliber nonconference opponent, the Warriors battled back to take the opener 4-2 before edging the Bulldogs 2-1 in overtime.
THURSDAY: Midland 4, Adrian 2
The Warriors were first to strike in the series opener as Victoria Campbell scored off assists from Callie Maguire and Darbi Poole at the 12:22 mark. Less than a minute later, the Bulldogs found the equalizer at 13:00. The score remained tied heading into the first intermission, with Midland holding a commanding 21-6 advantage in shots.
In the second period, Adrian took the lead with just over five minutes remaining. Midland's offense stayed aggressive, putting 18 more shots on target, but the Bulldog goaltender turned each one away.
Midland's persistence paid off early in the third. After Adrian was sent to the box for a tripping minor, Maguire pulled the Warriors even at 3:23 with assists from Jaden Greenlee and Kiara McGregor. Six minutes later, Kennedy Wood found the back of the net to give Midland the lead, with Poole and Heidi Danners earning assists on the eventual game-winner. Late in the period, Brooke Barylski sealed the win with an empty-net goal to make it 4-2.
Meghan Stewart earned the win in goal for the Warriors, making 18 saves. Midland held a decisive 50-20 advantage in shots.
FRIDAY: Midland 2, Adrian 1 (OT)
Game two was another tightly contested battle between perennial national championship contenders. After a scoreless first period, Midland's Grace Page broke through at the 10:37 mark of the second, scoring off an assist from Jaicee Huberdeau. Four minutes later, Adrian tied it up, sending the teams into the second intermission knotted at 1-1.
Neither team scored in the third, pushing the contest into a three-on-three overtime. Just over a minute into the extra session, Katie McNair netted the game-winner to secure the sweep for the Warriors.
Natalie Rampton picked up the win for Midland with 19 saves, while Adrian's goaltender made an impressive 51 stops.
Midland (11-0) continues its road trip this weekend with a two-game set at Indiana Tech (4-0). Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 and 1 p.m. on Oct. 12 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
