No. 1 Warriors Win Friday, Settle for OT Tie on Saturday
FREMONT, Neb. – No. 1-ranked Midland University returned to Sidner Ice Arena this weekend to face No. 11-ranked University of Jamestown. The Warriors and Jimmies met for the fifth and sixth time this season in what was another exciting chapter of a familiar rivalry. Midland extended its winning streak over Jamestown to five with a 2-0 victory on Friday, before the Jimmies fought back to earn a 1-1 overtime draw on Saturday.
FRIDAY: Midland 2, Jamestown 0
Friday's game started slowly, with both teams feeling each other out through a scoreless first period. The Warriors struck first just over 12 minutes into the second period when Darbi Poole broke through Jamestown's defense. Makenna Larson picked up the assist on what would become the game-winning goal.
Jordan Bell added some insurance later in the period, scoring with just 41 seconds left before the intermission to make it 2-0 Midland. In the third, Jamestown ramped up the pressure with six shots, but Meghan Stewart was there for every one, finishing with 10 saves to earn the shutout. Midland outshot the Jimmies 39-10.
SATURDAY: Midland 1, Jamestown 1 (OT)
Saturday's matchup started much like Friday, with a scoreless first period. Callie Maguire finally broke the deadlock in the second, putting Midland ahead. But Jamestown answered early in the third, sneaking a puck past Natalie Rampton to tie the game 1-1.
Neither team could find the winner in the five-minute, three-on-three sudden-victory overtime. Each team had two shots, but the game officially ended in a 1-1 tie. In a fan-centered exhibition shootout, Midland went 2-for-2 while Rampton stopped both Jamestown attempts.
Midland dominated the shot chart, 47-21, with Rampton making 20 saves over 65 minutes in net.
Midland (18-1-2) will enjoy a weekend off before heading to the Twin Cities for a pair of games against Minnesota (2-9). Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, and 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in Minneapolis.
