Bio

Denny Honnold joined the Midland Football staff prior to the 2020 season and serves as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Throughout his career, Honnold has been to five National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Playoffs, been a part of four conference championships at the NAIA level, and has coached over 40 all-conference players, numerous All-Americans, and over 10 Academic All-Americans.

Prior to joining the Midland staff, Honnold coached defense and special teams at Wayne State College for three seasons (2017-19). During his three years, the Wildcats ranked second in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II in interceptions. In 2017, the team ranked fourth nationally in takeaways.

Before coaching at WSC, Honnold spent three seasons (2014-16) coaching defense at Robert Morris University in Illinois. Under his guidance, the Robert Morris defense ranked in the top 10 in the NAIA in multiple defensive categories, including being first in rushing yards allowed per game in 2014, third in opponent first downs and opponent 3rd down conversions in 2015, and fifth in yards allowed per game and scoring defense in 2015. RMU reached the NAIA National Playoffs in 2016.

From 2007-13, Honnold served as an assistant coach at Missouri Valley College. During his time, the Vikings reached made four appearances in the NAIA Playoffs (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013) and advanced to the National Semifinal round in 2012.

Honnold’s collegiate coaching career has also included stops at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas (2005-06) and North Iowa Area Community College (2003-04).

Coach Honnold is an alumnus of Iowa State University. Prior to his time as a Cyclone, Honnold played safety at Iowa Central Community College. In addition to coaching, Honnold has also been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist since 2002.

Honnold, a Des Moines, Iowa native, is a graduate of Lincoln High School. He and his wife, Tabetha, currently reside in the Fremont area.
