Warriors Record Senior Day Shutout
Fremont, Neb. – The (RV) Midland University flag football team recognized seven seniors Saturday afternoon at Heedum Field, then recorded a 39-0 victory over the Cottey College Comets in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action. Midland (2-2, 1-1 KCAC) earned its first shutout of the season, while Cottey (3-2, 1-2 KCAC) dropped its second consecutive game.
The Comets were held to a three-and-out on their opening possession and were forced to punt. Midland ran eight plays and got on the board when Lotta Wulff completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Holiness Hodges. The conversion pass was good, giving Midland a 7-0 lead with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter.
Cottey got the ball back but was forced to punt again after another three-and-out. Midland advanced to the Comets' one-yard line but was held scoreless. After Cottey ran one play, the first quarter ended with Midland leading 7-0.
Midland extended its lead when Wulff connected with Alyssa Butler on an eight-yard touchdown pass. The conversion attempt failed, but with 8:28 remaining in the half, the Warriors led 12-0. The Warriors scored again before halftime as Wulff threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Emily Ferron. The successful conversion put Midland ahead 19-0 with 21 seconds left in the half, a score that would hold at the break.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Warriors put the game out of reach in the fourth. Wulff connected with Olivia Dominguez-Millsop on a 15-yard touchdown pass, and the successful one-point conversion extended the lead to 26-0 with 10:01 remaining.
After a Cottey punt, Midland scored four plays later when Dominguez-Millsop completed a four-yard touchdown pass to Ferron. The conversion was good, giving Midland a 33-0 lead with 5:08 left.
Midland's final score came with 56 seconds remaining after Karina Alfaro threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Hodges. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the Warriors with a 39-0 advantage. Cottey moved the ball into Midland territory on the final drive, but time expired.
Midland ran 44 plays for 310 total yards, completing 30 of 40 passes for 285 yards. The Warriors ran four times for 25 yards. Cottey had 45 plays for 88 yards, completing 12 of 31 passes for 96 yards and rushing 14 times for minus eight yards.
Individually for Midland, Wulff completed 19 of 29 passes for 191 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Alfaro was 3-for-3 for 46 yards and a touchdown. Dominguez-Millsop was 7-for-7 for 43 yards and a touchdown. Wulff carried the ball once for 13 yards. Receiving leaders included Dominguez-Millsop with three catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, Hodges with eight receptions for 49 yards and two touchdowns, Butler with six catches for 44 yards and a touchdown, and Ferron with three catches for 43 yards and two touchdowns.
For Cottey, Raniya Griffin completed 12 of 31 passes for 96 yards. Monica Blanc ran three times for three yards, and Xitlali Botts caught four passes for 47 yards.
Defensively, Midland was led by NaTaija Blaylock with six tackles. Cottey's Dominique Derraco-Franklin recorded eight stops and returned an interception 17 yards.
Prior to the game, Midland recognized its seven seniors: Alyssa Butler, Eunice Sambilay, Emily Ferron, Olivia Dominguez-Millsop, Jocelyn Lopez, NaTaija Blaylock, and Allaya Livingston.
The Warriors continue their homestand when they host the Bethel College Threshers on Wednesday, March 11, at 5 p.m. at Heedum Field.
