FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Midland University Flag Football went 1-2 on Saturday at the Cougar Classic, opening the day with a 25-13 win over Siena Heights before falling to Campbellsville, 20-14, and host Saint Francis, 42-19.
GAME ONE: Midland 25, Siena Heights 13
Midland used a strong passing performance from quarterback Lotta Wulff and a takeaway-filled defensive effort to earn its first win of the tournament.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Warriors struck first on a touchdown pass midway through the second. Siena Heights responded with a scoring drive to tie the game, but Midland regained the lead just before halftime on a quick four-play, 67-yard march to take a 12-7 advantage into the break.
The Warriors extended the lead in the third quarter and later capped a 10-play, 66-yard drive with 5:44 remaining to seal the victory.
Wulff finished 25-of-40 passing for 266 yards and four touchdowns. Melanie Archuleta caught two touchdown passes, while Alyssa Butler and Allaya Livingston also hauled in scoring receptions.
Holiness Hodges led the receiving corps with 11 catches for 109 yards. Defensively, Midland recorded five interceptions — four by Olivia Dominguez-Millsop — and added a sack from NaTaija Blaylock.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 20, Midland 14
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off a late surge from the Tigers in the second contest of the day.
Midland opened the scoring on a lengthy 12-play, 66-yard drive, and later pushed its lead to 14-7 early in the second quarter after a quick two-play scoring march. Campbellsville answered with a touchdown before halftime and then delivered the decisive score with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Wulff completed 31-of-42 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Hodges turned in a standout performance with 18 receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown, while Livingston added seven catches for 57 yards and a score.
Blaylock registered two sacks to pace the Midland defense, and Archuleta also recorded a sack in the setback.
GAME THREE: Saint Francis 42, Midland 19
Midland closed the tournament against host Saint Francis in a high-scoring affair that saw the Cougars pull away in the second half.
After trailing 7-6 late in the second quarter, the Warriors briefly took the lead early in the third on a touchdown pass from Karina Alfaro, but Saint Francis answered with multiple quick scores to seize control. Midland added another touchdown later in the quarter, yet the Cougars extended their advantage with two fourth-quarter scores.
Alfaro threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns, with Hodges recording seven receptions for 142 yards and two scores. Dominguez-Millsop also caught a touchdown pass.
Defensively, Emily Ferron led the Warriors with 10 tackles, while Blaylock and Dominguez-Millsop each recorded sacks.
Midland (6-4, 5-1 KCAC) will return to conference action with a road game at Ottawa (XXX) next weekend. The teams will take to the turf at AdventHealth Field in Ottawa, Kansas, at noon on Saturday, March 28.
