Warriors Place Fifth at BCU Match Play Event

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Midland University continued its spring season this week, competing in the Briar Cliff University Match Play Tournament on Monday and Tuesday. The Warriors went 1-2 in three match-play rounds, falling to Mount Marty and Hastings by 3-2 scores before rebounding with a 4-1 win over Dakota Wesleyan, to finish the event tied for fifth.

Individually, Tevin Cunningham led the way, winning all three of his matches without trailing in any of them. In his match against Mount Marty's Guus Van Loon, Cunningham jumped out to a five-hole lead by winning six of the first nine holes before cruising to a 4-and-3 victory. In his second match against Hastings, he carried a one-hole lead into the final hole and secured a 2-up win. In his final match against Dakota Wesleyan's Dakota Munger, the two were tied heading into the final hole, where Cunningham made a birdie to secure the match.

Brady Davis was Midland's next-best performer, finishing with a 2-0-1 record. In his first match against Mount Marty's Hunter Bailey, Davis fell behind by four holes through six before rallying to win five consecutive holes, aided by four birdies on holes 11-14, to take a one-hole lead. Bailey answered to even the match, which ended in a tie with both golfers winning five holes and halving eight. Davis carried that momentum into his final two matches, earning an eagle in a 4-and-2 win over Hastings' Jake Vick and defeating Dakota Wesleyan's Will Jarding, 4 and 3.

Janlo Zaayman finished 1-1-1 for Midland. He opened with a tie against Mount Marty's Wout Kerkhofs, recording an eagle in the match, before falling to Hastings' Blake Eddy, who went 2 up with one hole remaining. Zaayman closed the event with a win over Dakota Wesleyan's Peyton Bettcher, going 3 up with one to play.

Rounding out the Warriors' lineup were Luke Friedrichsen and Isaiah Weber. Friedrichsen went 1-2, earning his lone victory against Dakota Wesleyan's Jack Olson, 4 and 3. Weber finished 0-3, with his final two matches against Hastings and Dakota Wesleyan both coming down to the final hole, where his opponents secured the wins.

The Warriors return to action April 10 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, at the Iowa Central Spring Invite at Fort Dodge Country Club.
