Warriors Open Season with Strong Showing at FHSU Invite
HAYS, Kan. - In their first outing of the outdoor season, Midland University showcased their talent at the 2024 Fort Hays State Spring Invite in Hays, Kansas. Battling through challenging winds and cold temperatures, the Warriors displayed commendable performances across various events.
On the track, Lucas Hjortkjaer exhibited a strong start for Midland, securing a 6th place finish in the 1500m event with a time of 4:10.50. Evan Shepard impressed in the 110m hurdles, claiming 4th place with a time of 15.14.
Blake Olbrich and Noah Sherman showcased their speed in the 400m race, with Olbrich finishing 8th at 53.01 and Sherman closely behind in 9th with a time of 53.41. Henri Stoeckermann clinched 4th place in the 800m with a time of 1:56.56. The relay team, comprising Sherman, Olbrich, Stoeckermann, and Hjortkjaer, secured a notable 2nd place finish with a time of 3:28.34.
In the field events, Midland's athletes continued to shine. Garrett Guindon soared to 9th place in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.87m. Robert Atwater achieved the NAIA 'B' standard with a runner-up height of 2.02m, while Shandon Reitzell claimed victory and his first event title, reaching the NAIA 'A' standard with an impressive clearance of 2.07m.
Atwater also showcased his versatility with a 6th-place finish in the pole vault at 4.53m. However, it was in the long jump where Atwater truly excelled, securing his first outdoor event title with a leap of 7.59m, also meeting the NAIA 'A' standard.
Midland will be back in action in just over a week as the spring season starts to take off. The Warriors will take part in the Central Nebraska Challenge on Saturday, March 30 in Kearney, Neb.
