Warriors Compete at Grand View Open

GRIMES, Iowa — The Midland University men's wrestling team faced some of the toughest competition in the country Saturday at the Grand View Open, held at the Ignit Sports Complex.

Three Warriors competed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, all at 197 pounds.

Collin Stone went 1-2. After a first-round bye, Stone lost by fall to Tyler Pankey of Cloud County Community College at 4:30. He then defeated teammate Jeremy Felix by a 10-4 decision before his day ended with a loss by fall to Mekhi Bovee of Morningside at 1:28.

Felix went 0-2. He was defeated by technical fall, 17-2, by Samuel Watkins of Nebraska-Kearney and then fell to Stone in the consolation bracket.

Treyton Tweton finished 1-2. After a first-round bye, he trailed Noah Austin of Missouri Baptist but came back to win by fall at 2:45. Tweton then lost by technical fall, 15-2, to Umair Ahmad of Iowa Central Community College and ended his day with a fall to Bovee at 4:04.

Midland had two wrestlers compete in the Open Division.

Brian Dryer wrestled at 141 pounds. After a first-round bye, he lost by a 12-1 major decision to Gavin Shoush of Central Methodist. Dryer then bowed out of his next match against 22nd-ranked Bryant Beane of Campbellsville by medical forfeit.

At 125 pounds, Dylan Atherton led Midland with a strong performance. After a first-round bye, he defeated Logan Lopez of Grand View by a 4-2 decision. In the quarterfinals, Atherton lost to No. 3 Matteo Vargo of Cumberlands by an 11-5 decision. He bounced back with a 12-7 decision over Amari Harden of Campbellsville, then pinned Derrick Bass of Grand View at 2:41. Atherton won his consolation semifinal by medical forfeit over Kobi Johnson of Providence before dropping a 4-2 decision to Brandon Perez of Northern Iowa in the third-place match.

Midland will be back in action next weekend, competing at the UNK Open on Saturday, Nov. 22, in Kearney, Nebraska.
