Warriors Split Matchup at GPAC Duals
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Midland University joined fellow Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) programs on Tuesday for a day of duals inside the Hindman-Hobbs Center. The Warriors opened the evening with a 35-18 win over Dakota Wesleyan University before falling to host Morningside University, 35-16.
Midland 35, Dakota Wesleyan 18
With each team open at differing weight classes, only four weights featured contested action. At 125 pounds, Dylan Atherton earned a major decision (14-2) over Chase Preston to give Midland an early lead. Following two open weights for the Warriors, Zion Amerson secured the second contested bout of the dual, winning by technical fall (17-1, 4:14) over Zach Kolbe at 149.
After a series of non-contested results, Nate McDonald took the mat at 184 against Jaxon Quail. McDonald posted a major decision (14-3) to extend Midland's lead to 25-18 and clinch the dual with two weights remaining. The Tigers were open at 197, and in the finale at 285, Zeph Sivels recorded a major decision (10-2) over Cole Henning to close out the 35-18 victory.
The dual win was Midland's first over Dakota Wesleyan since the 2022-23 season, snapping a streak of 20 straight losses.
Morningside 35, Midland 16
Against the host Mustangs, the Warriors weren't afforded any easy points as Morningside filled its entire lineup. Midland forfeited three weight classes, giving up 18 points early.
In the opening bout, Noah Thorsen edged Atherton, 4-2, at 125. At 149, Morningside's Cade Eggleston earned a technical fall (21-4, 6:36) over Amerson. Francisco Duran followed with a narrow 10-7 loss to Wiley Hegwer at 157, and at 174, Jaylen Adams fell by fall (1:20) to Braedyn Rakes.
Midland rebounded in the final three contested bouts. At 184, McDonald picked up his second major decision of the day, defeating Joseph Monge 13-4. Treyton Tweton followed with a win by fall (4:49) over Mekhi Bovee at 197. In the heavyweight bout, Sivels earned a pin of his own, taking down Jaxson Boyd in 1:23.
Midland will return to competition in just over a week at the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday, Dec. 6. Action begins at 9 a.m. inside Fuhrer Field House in Crete, Nebraska.
