Tweton Leads Warriors at 918 Open
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — The (RV) Midland University wrestling team sent seven wrestlers to compete in the 918 Open, hosted by Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Saturday at the Broken Arrow Event Center. Treyton Tweton led the Warriors with a fourth-place finish in the 197-pound weight class.
Dylan Atherton returned to the mat at 125 pounds, going 1-2. After an opening-round bye, Atherton defeated Diego Barajas (unattached) by major decision, 9-1. He then fell to Mason Gillespie (Northeastern Oklahoma) by fall at 4:29. Atherton's day ended with a medical forfeit loss to Desmond Mayfield (Murray State) in the consolation round.
Midland had three competitors in the 149-pound division. Brian Dryer went 0-2, falling to Thomas Vasquez (Friends) by major decision, 13-2, in the opening round before forfeiting to Diego Gauna (unattached) in the consolation round.
Hunter True finished 2-2 at 149 pounds. True opened the tournament with a first-round fall over Peyton Westby (Ottawa) at 1:38, followed by a technical fall victory over Alex Lopez (unattached), 16-1, at 4:13. True then suffered a technical fall loss to Brandon Bauer (unattached), 15-0, at 2:13, before concluding his day with an 11-4 decision loss to Donte Lopez (Oklahoma Wesleyan) in the consolation round.
Zion Amerson went 1-2 at 149 pounds. He opened with a 4-1 sudden-victory loss to Hunter Avalos (unattached) before rebounding with a 20-5 technical fall win over Gavin Patterson (Southeast Community College) at 4:50. Amerson was eliminated in the next round by Kade Carter (Murray State), 8-5, in sudden victory.
At 184 pounds, No. 19 Nate McDonald posted a 3-2 record. McDonald earned a walkover win over Cole Olguin (Oklahoma City) in his opening bout, then advanced with a medical forfeit victory against Miguel Eulloqui (Northern Oklahoma College–Tonkawa). He later dropped a walkover decision to Cameron Johnson (Central Oklahoma) before rebounding with a fall over Owen McAnulty (Cowley College) at 2:28. McDonald's tournament ended with a 9-4 decision loss to Jack Doughty (Southeast Community College).
Two Warriors competed at 197 pounds. Collin Stone went 1-2 after an opening-round bye. Stone defeated Tyler Medeiros (Murray State) by fall at 2:05 before falling to Omari Smith (Oklahoma City) by major decision, 12-0. Stone was eliminated in the consolation round by Jonathan Chiaffitelli (Oklahoma City) by major decision, 11-2.
Treyton Tweton claimed fourth place for Midland at 197 pounds. Following a first-round bye, Tweton earned back-to-back fall victories over Cameron Pride (Oklahoma Wesleyan) at 1:44 and Jason Osgood (Cowley College) at 4:53. He then suffered a fall loss to Samuel Montoya (Southeast Community College) at 3:16. Tweton rebounded in the consolation semifinals with a fall over Jonathan Chiaffitelli (Oklahoma City) at 1:16 before dropping the third-place match to Jackson Blackburn (Central Oklahoma) by major decision, 12-0.
The Warriors return to action Thursday, Jan. 8, at a triangular in Seward, Nebraska. Midland will face Concordia at 5 p.m. before taking on Friends at 6 p.m.
