Warriors Fall to Bellevue in Bruin Classic Opener
BELLEVUE, Neb. – Midland University resumed play after the Christmas break, taking on host Bellevue University in the Four Points by Sheraton Bruin Classic at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center on Sunday. Despite a strong effort, the Warriors fell to the Bruins, 80-60.
The game started competitively, with Erin Foxhall scoring the first points on a layup. Bellevue settled in and found its rhythm, finishing the opening quarter ahead 20-14. Midland shot 46.7% in the first period but struggled with turnovers, which the Bruins capitalized on.
In the second quarter, Bellevue took control, outscoring Midland 31-10. The Bruins shot an impressive 73.3% from the field during the period, including several key buckets during a 9-0 run to start the quarter. Meanwhile, the Warriors struggled offensively, managing just 20% shooting. Bellevue held a commanding 51-24 lead at halftime.
Midland found some offensive momentum in the third quarter, led by Sarah Shepard and Ellie Bovaird. The Warriors outscored the Bruins 19-15, narrowing the deficit slightly. However, Bellevue's dominant second quarter allowed them to maintain a comfortable 66-43 lead heading into the final period.
In the fourth, the Warriors continued to battle, with Jenna Weber and Erin Foxhall adding to the scoring effort. Despite their determination, Midland couldn't overcome the gap, and Bellevue secured the victory, 80-60.
Shepard led the Warriors with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Bovaird and Weber each contributed 10 points. Foxhall added 12 points and three steals. The Warriors excelled at the free-throw line, converting 87.5% of their attempts. They also won the rebounding battle, 35-26, showing improvement in the second half.
Midland (1-11) will return to action on Monday, December 30, against Mayville State (9-4). Tipoff is set for 12:30 p.m. inside the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
