Warriors Win Home-Opening Dual

FREMONT, Neb. — (RV) Midland University hosted its first dual of the season Tuesday night at the Wikert Event Center, where the Warrior women defeated GPAC foe Morningside University, 32–16. In a dual that had four open weight classes, all six contested bouts were decided via bonus points.

In the 103-pound bout, Midland's Kyra Gonzalez earned her first win of the season via forfeit, as Morningside was open. In the 110-pound bout, Midland's Zoe Omura picked up a win over Alyssa Olson by technical fall, 12-2, at 3:30. After two bouts, Midland led 9–1.

The Warriors earned another victory at 117 pounds as Destiny Castillo recorded her second win of the season with another forfeit. In the 124-pound bout, 19th-ranked Taylor Hood defeated Callee Shearer by technical fall, 10-0, at 3:00. After four bouts, Midland led 18–1.

Morningside earned its lone contested victory at 131 pounds, where Elizabeth Rubio defeated Midland's Eny Bravo by fall at 1:45. In the 138-pound bout, 9th-ranked Maci Avila defeated Adilene Delgadillo by technical fall, 10-0, at 0:46. After six bouts, Midland led 23–6.

In the 145-pound bout, Midland's Andrea Frisque defeated Josie Biffar via injury at 2:50. The Warriors' final victory came at 160 pounds when Ja'Nya Banks defeated Baylie Wehmeyer by technical fall, 10-0, at 2:53. After eight bouts, Midland led 32–6.

Midland was open in the final two bouts. Morningside's Taylor Pavlik claimed victory at 180 pounds, and Nevaeh Hast won at 207. Midland won the dual by a final score of 32–16.

"We showed up and were ready to wrestle tonight," said Midland head coach Chelsea Dionisio. "I felt we applied what we've been working on in the wrestling room well on the mat tonight. The entire team showed growth and support for each other."

Midland will travel to Crete, Nebraska, on Saturday to compete in the Conner/Oppenheim Invitational.

"We will take a small crew with us this weekend, as we are battling through some injuries. We are looking forward to good competition on Saturday," Dionisio said.
