Warrior Trio Grapples at Doane
CRETE, Neb. — Midland University sent three wrestlers to compete in the Connor/Oppenheim Open on Friday at the Fuhrer Fieldhouse, hosted by Doane University.
Two Warriors competed in the elite division. At 117 pounds, No. 19 Taylor Hood went 4-2. After a first-round bye, Hood suffered a loss to Menlo College's Hayden Fry by fall at 1:59. She then rattled off four straight wins. Hood defeated No. 18 Isabelle Asuncion of Providence via forfeit, followed by a fall over Providence's Angelia Doral at 1:17. She added another win with a fall over Westcliff's Tianna Fernandez at 2:43. Hood continued her momentum with a fall over Ottawa's Sigrun Metzger at 3:00.
Her day ended in the consolation semifinals with a loss to No. 6 Kylie Robledo of Baker by fall at 2:16.
At 160 pounds, Ja'Nya Banks went 0-2. She was defeated by unattached wrestler Darby Weidl in a 10-0 technical fall at 1:14, then fell to Josephine Ives of William Penn by a 4-2 decision.
In the amateur division, Danielle Franco went 2-2 at 145 pounds. She opened with a win by fall over Peyton Dunn in 1:12 before falling to Eastern Oregon's Paige Allen by fall at 1:19. Franco bounced back with a 10-0 technical fall over Haley Sheppard of Friends at 1:26. Her day concluded with a 6-4 loss to Koryn Klein of Southeast Community College.
Midland will return to action on Friday, Jan. 16, for a dual at York University against the Panthers. Competition is set for 6 p.m.
