Women’s Wrestling Hosts Warrior Open
FREMONT, Neb. — The Midland University women's wrestling team hosted the Warrior Open Saturday at the Wikert Event Center. Athletes representing 32 different teams competed in the event. Maci Avila had the top performance for the Warriors, earning three victories in the 138-pound division.
Kyra Gonzalez wrestled at 103 pounds and went 0-2. After an opening-round bye, Gonzalez was defeated by Bertha Cabrera of Southeast Community College by technical fall, 10-0, at 1:07. In the consolation round, Gonzalez lost to Almarwa Alkhalil (Unattached) by technical fall, 10-0, at 1:06.
Destiny Castillo competed at 110 pounds. After an opening-round bye, Castillo lost to Payton Agnell of Lindsey Wilson College by fall at 0:44. In the consolation round, Castillo was defeated by No. 19-ranked Deyton Young of Missouri Baptist by technical fall, 10-0, at 2:00.
Taylor Hood, ranked 16th in the NAIA at 117 pounds, went 2-2. In round one, Hood defeated Sophia Castillo of Baker by fall at 0:36. In round two, Hood was defeated by Jasimen Ortega of Southeast Community College by fall at 1:19. In the consolation round, Hood defeated Kaylei Hinck of Dakota Wesleyan by fall at 1:00. Hood's day ended in the next round with a 5-3 decision loss to Hailey Medina of Iowa Western Community College.
Alexis Oliver wrestled at 124 pounds. After an opening-round bye, Oliver lost to Anastasia Ruka of Iowa Western Community College by 12-5 decision. In the consolation round, Oliver was defeated by No. 11-ranked Kalliscya Gardner of Lindsey Wilson College by fall at 1:05.
Maci Avila, ranked No. 6 at 138 pounds in the NAIA, went 3-2. In round one, Avila defeated Lisa Hoeflich of Hastings by fall at 2:33. In round two, Avila was defeated by Ashlynn Goodwin of Fort Hays State by fall at 3:00. In the consolation round, Avila defeated Lillian Hagemann of Southeast Community College by technical fall, 10-0, at 0:44. She added another victory over Clover Williams (Unattached) by 7-5 decision. Avila's day ended in the next round with a fall loss to Adrienna Turner of Grand View at 1:12.
Andrea Frisque was one of two Warriors wrestling at 145 pounds. After an opening-round bye, Frisque lost to Maeley Elsbury of William Penn by fall at 4:24. In the consolation round, she was defeated by Jade Martin of Baker by fall at 4:40. Also competing at 145 pounds for Midland was Danielle Franco. After an opening-round bye, Franco lost to Koryn Klein of Southeast Community College by fall at 0:59. In the consolation round, Franco was defeated by Lucia Henriquez of Baker by technical fall, 12-2, at 3:00.
Hallie Stone wrestled at 160 pounds. After an opening-round bye, Stone defeated Carly Klein of Grand View by fall at 1:29. Stone dropped her next match to Alexis Burton of Fort Hays State by fall at 4:51. Stone's day ended in the consolation round with a loss to Kylee Eastwood of William Penn by criteria.
Noelia Sedano competed in the 235-pound bracket. After an opening-round bye, Sedano lost to Kennedi Washington of Indian Hills Community College by 3-0 decision. In the consolation round, Sedano was defeated by Hannah Francis of Indian Hills Community College by fall at 2:09.
Midland will return to action Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Grand View Open. Competition begins at 9 a.m. inside the Dave Sisam Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
