Warriors Compete at ITA Regionals

SALINA, Kan. – Midland University's tennis teams took to the courts over the weekend at the ITA Central-West Regional Championships, facing strong competition from across the region. The Warriors picked up several wins in both singles and doubles play during the two-day event.

In men's singles, Unai Llerena Perez opened with a tough loss to Jonathan Danzic of Texas Wesleyan (6-4, 6-1) but bounced back to defeat Southwestern's Victor Arias (8-3) in his second match. Teammate Zhanxing Yu notched a first-round victory over Concordia's Benjamin Chisholm (6-1, 7-6) before falling to Morningside's Mathys Arnold (6-1, 6-0).

In men's doubles, Llerena Perez teamed up with Daniel Liebig. The pair dropped their first match to Texas Wesleyan's Alejo Zurmendi and Danzic (8-4) but regrouped to sweep Southwestern's Connor Stampley and Drake Lowe (6-0).

On the women's side, Ai Katsura and Graziela Dallagnol each earned a singles win after opening-round setbacks. Katsura fell to Morningside's Stefany Simplicio (6-2, 6-0) before defeating Bethany's Helen Harbit (8-5). Dallagnol dropped a close match to Morningside's Lara Heinrich (6-0, 7-5) but rebounded with a victory over Kansas Wesleyan's Corina Salas (8-5).

In women's doubles, the duo of Dallagnol and Katsura fell in their opener to Bethel's Patty Huerta and Ximena Raya Arredondo (8-0) but responded with a win over Bethany's Ana Sofia Castillo Paz and Harbit (6-4).

Midland's performances in Salina provided valuable early-season experience. The Warriors' men have one more event on their fall calendar, a dual with Creighton on Saturday, October 18 in Omaha, Nebraska.
