Northwestern Edges Warriors in GPAC Opener

FREMONT, Neb. — Midland University opened Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play on Saturday afternoon, hosting Northwestern College inside the Fremont YMCA. The Red Raiders narrowly defeated the Warriors, 4-3, in a tightly contested dual.

Northwestern secured the early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the team point. Matilde Di Martino and Pietra Ferreira posted a 6-2 win over Graziela Dallagnol and Ai Katsura at No. 1 doubles, while Madalyn Kolb and Bryn Higginbotham followed with a 6-3 victory against Lillie Johnston and Malena Hernandez at No. 2. Midland picked up its lone doubles win at No. 3 as Andrea Vasquez and Ana Larreal earned a 6-3 decision over Alloree Else and Hannah Beckloff.

In singles play, the Warriors battled back with three straight-set victories. Katsura rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, Hernandez dominated at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-0 result, and Larreal added a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6.

The match ultimately came down to the top half of the lineup, where Northwestern claimed three points. Di Martino rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Dallagnol at No. 1 singles, Ferreira defeated Vasquez 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, and Kolb outlasted Johnston in a three-set battle, 7-6, 0-6, 6-3, at No. 4 to secure the deciding point for the Red Raiders.

Midland (2-6, 0-1 GPAC) will look to bounce back on Sunday as it travels to Crete, Neb., to face Baker in a non-conference matchup. First serve is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on the campus of Doane University.
