Strong Singles Play Lifts Warriors Past Lancers

YANKTON, S.D. — Midland University picked up a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) road victory on Monday afternoon, defeating Mount Marty University, 6-1, in women's tennis action.

The Warriors secured the doubles point with wins on the top two courts. At No. 1 doubles, Lillie Johnston and Malena Hernandez posted a 6-3 decision over Camila Lopez and Maria Azul Medina Lobos. Graziela Dallagnol and Ai Katsura followed with a dominant 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles against Brooklyn McNac and Alexandra Salazar.

In singles play, Midland won three contested matches in straight sets to seal the team victory. Dallagnol rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, while Katsura earned a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 3. Hernandez was also strong at No. 4 singles, notching a 6-0, 6-0 victory over McNac.

Mount Marty's lone point came at the top of the lineup as Medina Lobos rallied past Andrea Vasquez in a three-set battle at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 7-2.

Due to roster limitations for the Lancers, Midland also collected default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 and No. 6 singles to round out the 6-1 final.

Midland (3-6, 1-1 GPAC) will be back in action this weekend with a road to face Missouri Baptist on Friday, in St. Louis, and then a match with William Woods on Saturday, in Fulton.
