Warriors Close Non-Conference Play with Matches in Missouri

FULTON, Mo. – Midland University wrapped up its non-conference slate over the weekend with a pair of road matches in Missouri, falling to (RV) Missouri Baptist University, 4-0, on Friday and No. 19-ranked William Woods University, 4-1, on Saturday.

MISSOURI BAPTIST 4, MIDLAND 0

Missouri Baptist secured the doubles point by taking two of three matches. Lillie Johnston and Malena Hernandez fell at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, while Ana Larreal and Andrea Vasquez dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 3. Midland picked up a win at No. 2 doubles as Graziela Dallagnol and Ai Katsura earned a 6-2 victory.

In singles play, Missouri Baptist clinched the match with wins at the top and middle of the lineup. Andrea Vasquez was defeated at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Lillie Johnston fell at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0. The deciding point came at No. 5 singles, where Malena Hernandez was forced to retire while trailing 4-2. Several matches went unfinished, including strong starts from Katsura at No. 3 singles and Dallagnol at No. 2.

NO. 19 WILLIAM WOODS 4, MIDLAND 1

William Woods took early control by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the opening point. The Owls won 6-3 at No. 1, 6-1 at No. 2, and 6-2 at No. 3.

In singles, Midland's lone point came at No. 3, where Ai Katsura rallied for a 1-6, 7-5, 10-2 win in a match tiebreak. The Owls secured the team victory with straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, as Andrea Vasquez and Lillie Johnston were each defeated in two sets. At No. 2 singles, Graziela Dallagnol pushed her opponent to a third-set tiebreak before falling 10-1.

Midland will return to Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play on Wednesday, April 1, traveling to Hastings. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Hastings, Nebraska.
