Warriors Down Hastings in GPAC Action
HASTINGS, Neb. – Midland University picked up a strong conference victory on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Hastings College, 5-2, in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) women's tennis action.
The Warriors set the tone early by claiming the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. After dropping the No. 1 doubles contest, Lillie Johnston and Andrea Vasquez fell 6-0, Midland responded with convincing wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Graziela Dallagnol and Ai Katsura earned a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Malena Hernandez and Ana Larreal secured the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Midland won four of the six matches to seal the team victory. Dallagnol battled back after dropping the first set to claim a three-set win at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Katsura added a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0, and Hernandez dominated at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Larreal capped the scoring for Midland with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Hastings picked up its two points at the top of the lineup. Josline Carter defeated Vasquez at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Cara Ansbach earned a 6-3, 7-5 win over Johnston at No. 4.
Midland (4-8, 1-1 GPAC) will look to continue its conference winning streak next week with a road match at Concordia (10-5, 1-1 GPAC). First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. in Seward, Neb.
