Warriors Open GPAC Play with Road Win
YANKTON, S.D. – Midland University earned a sweep in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) men's tennis action on Monday afternoon, defeating Mount Marty University, 7-0. The Lancers competed with just four available athletes, resulting in multiple forfeits as the Warriors opened conference play with a victory.
Midland secured the doubles point with convincing wins at the top two positions. The pairing of Zhanxing Yu and Martin Cisneros cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over Ignacio Gomez Vazquez and Marcos Moreno Navarro. At No. 2 doubles, Daniel Liebig and Unai Llerena matched that scoreline with a 6-1 triumph against Daniel Anderico and Parker Riley. The Warriors were also awarded the No. 3 doubles point by forfeit.
In singles play, Midland continued its strong showing by winning each contested match in straight sets. Martin Cisneros led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Moreno Navarro. Zhanxing Yu was pushed to three sets at No. 2 singles, rebounding from a first-set loss to defeat Gomez Vazquez, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.
At No. 3 singles, Unai Llerena earned a 6-2, 6-0 win against Anderico, while Daniel Liebig dominated his No. 4 singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 result over Riley. Midland was awarded wins by forfeit at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions to complete the 7-0 sweep.
Midland (4-8, 1-0 GPAC) will return to action this coming weekend with a pair of matches in Missouri. They'll take on Missouri Baptist in St. Louis on Friday, and then travel to face Williams Woods in Fulton on Saturday.
