Midland Rolls Past Hastings in GPAC Play
HASTINGS, Neb. – Midland University delivered a strong all-around performance on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Hastings College, 6-1, in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) men's tennis action.
The Warriors secured the early advantage by claiming the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. After falling at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, Midland responded with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Zhanxing Yu and Martin Cisneros earned a 6-4 win at No. 2, while Daniel Liebig and Unai Llerena edged out a 7-5 victory at No. 3 to give Midland a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Midland carried that momentum into singles, winning five of the six matches to put the dual away.
At the top of the lineup, Cisneros dominated No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Joel Carter. Yu followed with a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4. Llerena added another point at No. 3, battling to a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Liebig continued the surge with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 4 singles. Angel Bustos secured a quick win at No. 5, taking the match 1-0 before retirement.
In the most competitive match of the day, Marcin Gniadzik rallied at No. 6 singles after dropping the first set, 6-3. He bounced back to take the second set, 6-3, before sealing the match with a 10-5 victory in the tiebreak.
Midland (5-10, 2-0 GPAC) will look to keep momentum in conference play next week with a road match at Concordia (13-4, 1-1 GPAC). The teams will square off on Friday, April 10, in Seward, Neb., beginning at 4:30 p.m.
