Warriors’ Postseason Run Ends After GPAC Semifinal Loss

OMAHA, Neb. – Midland University opened play at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournament on Friday with a 4-0 sweep of Hastings College before falling 4-0 to Morningside University at the Koch Tennis Center.

MIDLAND 4, HASTINGS 0

Midland set the tone early by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Martin Cisneros and Zhanxing Yu earned a 6-3 victory at the top spot, while Unai Llerena and Daniel Liebig cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2. In singles, the Warriors dominated across the lineup, claiming straight-set victories in four completed matches to clinch the dual. Cisneros picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1, while Yu (6-0, 6-2), Llerena (6-0, 6-3), and Liebig (6-3, 6-1) added points to secure the sweep. Angel Bustos and Marcin Gniadzik were also in control of their matches before play was halted.

MORNINGSIDE 4, MIDLAND 0

In the semifinals, Midland ran into a strong Morningside squad that claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The Mustangs carried that momentum into singles play, earning straight-set victories at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 to secure the team result. Midland showed competitiveness in several spots, including at No. 1 singles where Cisneros led early, and at No. 2 where Yu won the opening set before the match was cut short. Despite the effort, Midland was unable to extend the dual as Morningside advanced.

"It was a tough end to our season, but the boys put up a good fight with three courts up a set," commented head coach Ari Lumanog. "We are proud of everything this team has accomplished."

With the split on the day, Midland concludes its run at the GPAC Tournament and wraps up the 2025-26 season.
